Paul and Robyn Mander established Broadwings Raptor Training and Conservation Centre on the Gold Coast in 2000.

Over the last 10 years, Broadwings has been contracted by the likes of Councils and Hamilton Island to control Ibis and Cockatoo overpopulations, and he assists with Bird Management programmes, wild care & wildlife agencies state wide. In addition to all of this, Broadwings has co-coordinated shows at major theme parks including Dreamworld & Australia Zoo.

Since the age of 3, British born Paul, son of a Falconer, has been fascinated by birds of prey. He has trained hundreds of different species of birds from all around the world. At the age of 15 he began working professionally with birds – conducting entertaining free flight shows in England, and at 19 he started his own Bird Centre in The Midlands.

Two years later he came to Australia to work for the Northern Territory Government training birds for the The Alice Springs Desert Park. This was a first of its kind in the world to completely recreate natural habitats for Public Exhibition.

Here he met his wife, Rob, moved to the Gold Coast and thus – ‘Broadwings’ was born. Now their two children Ethan and Zara are both enjoying a life growing up with birds and a menagerie of native wildlife.

Paul and Soren of Broadwings have created many world firsts, and his latest venture into the World of Romance is sure to astound.

For Paul and Rob this is a lifelong passion and a long process of training, observing, caring, nurturing, and loving. It is the unique bond that Paul has with his birds that make it all the more intriguing. With a mere hand signal or whistle Paul can bring Soren back from kilometres away.

Today Broadwings has over 70 birds that they look after – entirely self funded. In addition to their specialty of Birds of Prey, including Falcons, Hawks, Kytes, Harriers and Buzzards, they also an array of native wild life - snakes, crocodiles, possums, macaws, black cockatoos and lizard – available for school educational shows and children’s parties.

The proceeds of their commercial bookings go back into the centre to continue their rehabilitation work.
